Hosanna Barnes was born the day after Easter in April of 1999. I could not have been happier looking at her face and dreaming of our future. She was so beautiful. I had prayed all during my pregnancy that she would be a baby who would love to sing and worship God from a young age. When she was born, her fingers were so long ! I just knew my little girl was going to grow up singing and playing the piano! I was beside myself with excitement.
The fact that she was born the day after Easter that year was incredibly special to me. I have always loved the story of Jesus' triumphant entry to Jerusalem. If you have not read the story in a while, go back and read Mark 11:1-11. The crowd shouted “Hosanna! Hosanna!” as they waved palm branches, threw their garments down before Him and the donkey He rode, and rejoiced. Jesus was just days away from His death and resurrection. His sacrifice on the cross would pave the way for the world to be reconciled to Him. Naming my daughter “Hosanna” was my way of thanking God for her and what I believed her future to be as well as a way to remember His sacrifice and all that He paid the price for us to have.
Hosanna was a beautiful baby girl with a sassy little personality. She began speaking in full sentences when she was just a year old with remarkable clarity. She did not speak like a baby at all. Her speech was clear and crisp. On top of that, she had stunning red hair that was almost the exact color of a new penny in the sun and her green eyes sparkled just like her little personality. She loved to sing with her family in church and was a shot of pure joy in my day.
In December of 2001, Hosanna was diagnosed with Stage 3 Neuroblastoma. Over the next few months, she went down hill quickly from trying to take chemotherapy treatments her tiny body couldn’t endure. She eventually coded from the struggle and although she was eventually revived, the entire ordeal left her without the ability to walk, talk, play or sing. She lived until the age of 23 with severe disabilities from that episode. Hosanna passed away in November of 2022.
